Canon Character Information
Appearance: Charles Xavier is described as somewhat as a stuffed shirt. He is more on the preppy side than not. Charles, originally had wavy brown hair, around collar length, but due to a recent showdown with Apocalypse, he is now bald as a cueball. It should also be noted, that while he stands at six ft. Tall, and is slender, he has been in a wheelchair since 1963, although in his mindscapes he has hair and Charles does walk. His dress is always professional, usually consisting of a button down shirt, or Henley and slacks and a blazer. His most important trait is when he is using his telepathy his places his index and middle fingers to his temple.

History: here and here and here

Personality:

Charles Xavier comes from wealth and privilege, but that led to a lonely life. We first meet Charles as a little boy finding himself alone in the world, until one day he meets Raven, a mutant child much like himself alone and scared. Charles took her in as a little sister and built a life for them together. Charles has always had a kind and generous heart, which is shown early on in this act of kindness he shows a stranger.

Charles Xavier is my no means a saint. He certainly has his hubris, which he will admit but tends to dismiss without a second thought. He has come from a world of wealth, his firsthand experience of growing up with little to no personal interaction with his mother, to a man who has grown up making his decisions, molding his vision of the world for a long time. Charles is a man who expects to get what he wants when he wants it. The word no is not in his vocabulary and early on tends to dismiss it out of hand. The level of arrogance that Charles shows as a young man only proves to be his ultimate undoing. Charles lacks the coping skills for most of the emotional upheaval that happens after the events in Cuba.

Charles, especially when we first meet him, is arrogant, some might say it is his biggest fault, despite his arrogance or maybe because of it, he is also very much an idealist. His idealism, however, gives him a Pollyanna, black and white version of the world. Charles lives in a world where he believes there are right and wrong, good and evil and no in between. He wants what is best for both man and mutant kind, and genuinely believes that a Utopia can and should exist. The thought of Mutants and humans living and working together, in harmony, being supportive of one another, side by side is a good one, but the problem is that Charles fails in executing his best intentions.

Charles is incredibly book smart, but he has led a sheltered life in most ways, and some might consider him spoiled. His world view before the beach in Cuba is somewhat skewed however because he has never had to hide his mutation like his sister Raven, or attacked by others like Erik. He has been free and clear of any consequences and recriminations for as long as he has been an adult. He is used to being the smartest person in the room and not above using his mutation to his advantage with the ladies in the pub. At University, his is cocky and arrogant, and that attitude makes it next to impossible to listen to anyone since he is so busy doing what he thinks is best.

Meeting Erik Lehnsherr is a defining, perhaps the most defining moment in Charles' life. He had never existed outside of the world of academia before meeting Erik. Some might argue that jumping into the water to save Erik was both the best and worst decision that he made. Meeting a fellow mutant, knowing that he was not alone, that he could help other people changed the trajectory of Charles' life. Up until that point in time, everyone in Charles' life fit into the place that Charles put them in, but no box could hold Erik. Still, Charles did not give up hope that somehow he could make him change. Charles learns through experience that not all people are something that he can control with the best of intentions.

Charles, because of his mutation, hear other people's thoughts when they don't shield their minds. He hears so many voices in his head that it can be overwhelming for him. His mutation forces him to be somewhat clinical in dealing with his environment. He has a detached way of dealing with the people around because it is easier for him. He is an attentive, enthusiastic and supportive teacher, but he fails to see the personal struggles that his friends and students are going experiencing. He gets caught up in his vision of how he wants things to be, that he loses sight of the reality of what is going on in the lives of the people closest to him.

An example of this is his strained relationship with his sister Raven. She lived with him, was the person who knew him best, but he couldn't see past his rose-colored vision of the world to see that there might be another side or another way of doing things. A lot had happened to Charles when he was younger that has shaped who the man he is to become. The events in Cuba, turned Charles from an eager, idealistic young man, to an angry, bitter, alcohol abusing man, because he was not prepared for the battle between Magneto and himself, or the divide between Raven and himself. For ten years, he coped by numbing his body with alcohol and his mind with a serum that Hank created that allowed him to walk, but the cost was the loss of his telepathy.

Charles is a broken man, and he likes it that way. He was a man who didn't believe in the future, who traded the ability to communicate with people for the ability to walk and sleep without hearing voices in his head. He is angry, cynical, and sarcastic. Unable to cope with the loss of Raven and Erik, he gave up his future and everyone's future and disavowed Raven and Erik.

His feelings of bitterness are strong, but he still cares deeply about people, including the people that have hurt him most in the world, proving that he is more than just the events that have shaped him. He can finally let go of his vision of the future, and see it for what it is, deeply flawed. He lets go of his overbearing attitude towards her and realizes that she and others like her are capable of making their choices. The entire experience of going from losing his powers to regaining them has left Charles somewhat humbled, but no less determined, is finally able to shoulder the responsibility of other people's pain and suffering. He can focus his energy to help them through their pain instead of just ignoring it.

The new and improved Charles Xavier retains many of the most important traits of his original self, going through two timelines the way that he has, allows him to only retain bits and pieces of his more cynical side. He still has a hope and a belief that humans and mutants will rise to the occasion and fight for the betterment of the world. He knows that there are times when that has not happened and people that he loved have gotten hurt, which is one of the reasons that he fights so hard against the world that Apocalypse has envisioned, and why is hopeful for Erik that he has turned a corner, since Erik made the hard choice instead of the easy one. Even though he can be introverted and isolated at times, his belief in humanity has been restored. He has always believed that there was good in Erik, which is why he pushes past his abandonment issues and continues to reach out, despite evidence that he has no place in Erik's life. His faith in the work that he's doing for mutant kind is also restored, and that is mostly thanks to Erik.

Charles lives in an idealistic world, and for many years, too many to count really. He has learned to depend on himself for everything. It wasn’t that much of stretch that he would extend his protection to his sister Raven. Charles has always thought he knew what was best for everyone around him; he took pride in it, but it turned out to be his hubris. Raven was the one person that Charles depended on to always be there for him, regardless of their ideologies he thought that she was the one person that would never abandon him. The three most defining things to ever happen to Charles, all happened at the same time, and it upended his entire would and caused him to question everything he thought he knew. Charles views Erik as a kindred spirit in a way. He was there when Charles needed someone to reach out to, someone to help. Erik was like him, and for the first time, he didn’t feel alone. He had Raven, yes, but he viewed Raven as someone that he had to protect whereas, with Erik he found himself an equal. The two men by no means had the same ideals, but on some level, Charles felt that they wanted the same things, but they just had different ways of achieving them. Charles paralysis at the hands of a man that he deemed to be his best friend, rocked everything that Charles knew or thought to his very core.

He didn't handle losing the use of his legs well at all. Charles is a man who is in control of all things in his life. He has carefully orchestrated his entire life, but losing the use of his legs is like losing his conductor's wand. His world has tilted on its axis, and it leaves him not thinking clearly. A man that is as influential as Charles would never give up his gift for anything if he hadn't been burdened with loss and grief. People say that pain makes a person do dumb things, and unfortunately, Charles Xavier is no exception. He believes that he has no place helping anyone when he couldn't even save Erik. It is that knowledge, and feeling of hopelessness that causes him to mute his power in favor of walking.

Charles' head is not a pleasant place to be most of the time, which is why he shields so well. He likes projecting the friendly man that he shows the world. In Charles’ head, it’s easier to believe the lie than face the truth of what he is, or what he believes he is. He is a man that is deserving of abandonment. He doesn’t deserve to have people in his life that care about him because he will only end up hurting the people that he loves most in the world. Raven choosing to leave with Erik and walk away from him, only cemented the thought that he isn’t good enough for anyone. Luckily for the world and his students, Charles was able to get out of his head and see the bigger picture. He has Logan to thank for that. Logan, a man that was full of rage and need, was able to put that aside to help his fellow mutants, and that act, showed Charles that he was not the center of the universe, that other people needed him, most importantly Raven.

Raven will always matter to Charles, even since he now fully accepts her mutation. She will always have the freedom to be who she wants and choose what she wants, even if her choices crush Charles’ soul. Watching Raven walk away from their family killed a part of him, it’s a part that only comes to life when she is around. She and Erik are always on the edge of Charles’ thoughts, which is why there is no hesitation on his part to reach out to Raven in Paris and DC, and once again try and reach Erik in Eygpt. Charles has a generous heart and a great capacity for love and friendship, and that will always include Raven and Erik.
